Description
Day 1: Sofia - Malyovitsa area
A 1:30 hour transfer will take us from the capital Sofia to Maliovitsa, a valley in the northwestern part of the Rila Mountains, a popular climbing and cross-country skiing area. We start the climb from 1760 m, our starting point, to reach 1940 m, the Maliovitsa hut, where we will stay for the night. We have a couple of options for the rest of the day: climb the Camel Peak or the Popova Kapa Peak. Or, as an alternative and warm-up for the next few days, do half a day of off-piste skiing using the hills of the Maliovitsa ski area and do some training with avalanche equipment.
Ascent 800m Descent 800m
Day 2: Malyovitsa Peak
We start from the hut and climb the beautiful Malyovitsa Peak (+800m), then descend into the valley of the same name. Our second climb for the day could be to the Nameless Peak, which also has good slopes for skiing. Transfer to the village of Govedartsi (20 min) and accommodation in a family hotel.
Ascent 800m Descent 1000m
Day 3: Musala Peak - Sofia
A short transfer will take us to the Borovets ski resort, located on the slopes of Musala Peak (2925 m), the highest peak in the entire Balkan Peninsula. We take the cable car up to 2400 m and in 3 hours we reach the top. We ski down to the height of 1300 m and then we transfer back to Sofia (1 hour and 30 minutes).
